Narrative:
Altitude alert went off at 300 ft high, selected vertical speed to correct. Then hit altitude hold, at which time the autoplt went into a 1000 ft rate descent. Disconnected autoplt at 400 ft below FL290 and immediately corrected back to FL290. Reconnected autoplt with no further problems.

Title: AN MD SUPER 80 AT FL290 WITH AUTOPLT ON ALT HOLD DEVIATED FROM ASSIGNED ALT AND WHEN CORRECTIONS MADE THE AUTOPLT COMMANDED A 1000 FPM DSCNT. DSNDED 400 FT BEFORE CORRECTION BACK TO FL290 WAS MADE.
Narrative: ALT ALERT WENT OFF AT 300 FT HIGH, SELECTED VERT SPD TO CORRECT. THEN HIT ALT HOLD, AT WHICH TIME THE AUTOPLT WENT INTO A 1000 FT RATE DSCNT. DISCONNECTED AUTOPLT AT 400 FT BELOW FL290 AND IMMEDIATELY CORRECTED BACK TO FL290. RECONNECTED AUTOPLT WITH NO FURTHER PROBS.
