Narrative:
Left tri-county 48V passing bjc to east at 7000 ft MSL. Climb limited by engine (85 hp). I believed I was at least 5 mi out. Radio on 118.6 jeffco tower frequency. Attempting to set up GPS for distance verification. Transponder on with altitude. Noticed jet approaching. I immediately veered to east. Almost immediately I heard jeffco tower inquire for aircraft identify. I did not know it was appropriate to contact tower if not outside of class D airspace (which I believed I was). Future procedure: GPS on to bjc. Contact tower before takeoff, or immediately following. Better identify boundary airways and keep landmarks. I go near bjc class D airspace often. I want them to know where I am.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PVT PLT OF A MOTORIZED GLIDER INADVERTENTLY CLBED THROUGH CLASS D AIRSPACE CAUSING AN AIRBORNE CONFLICT WHEN HE HAD TO TAKE EVASIVE ACTION TO AVOID A SMALL JET. EVEN THOUGH HE HEARD THE TWR CALL FOR HIS ACFT IDENT, HE DID NOT RESPOND.
Narrative: LEFT TRI-COUNTY 48V PASSING BJC TO E AT 7000 FT MSL. CLB LIMITED BY ENG (85 HP). I BELIEVED I WAS AT LEAST 5 MI OUT. RADIO ON 118.6 JEFFCO TWR FREQ. ATTEMPTING TO SET UP GPS FOR DISTANCE VERIFICATION. XPONDER ON WITH ALT. NOTICED JET APCHING. I IMMEDIATELY VEERED TO E. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY I HEARD JEFFCO TWR INQUIRE FOR ACFT IDENT. I DID NOT KNOW IT WAS APPROPRIATE TO CONTACT TWR IF NOT OUTSIDE OF CLASS D AIRSPACE (WHICH I BELIEVED I WAS). FUTURE PROC: GPS ON TO BJC. CONTACT TWR BEFORE TKOF, OR IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING. BETTER IDENT BOUNDARY AIRWAYS AND KEEP LANDMARKS. I GO NEAR BJC CLASS D AIRSPACE OFTEN. I WANT THEM TO KNOW WHERE I AM.
