Narrative:
At 500 ft on approach, #1 generator tripped with normal indications. All other indications normal. Uneventful landing, rollout and taxi in was accomplished. As so was running the checklist in attempt to restore #1 generator, simultaneously with him closing the field switch, #1 engine fire warnings were noted (bell, light in fire handle, system fire loop lights) no other abnormal indications. Throttle was already at idle. (We were 50 ft from gate.) continued taxi to gate, shut down #1 engine. Called for fire checklist and called for crash crew. Pulled fire handle. Shot #1 fire bottle. Waited 30 seconds. Second bottle did not fire. About 1 min after bottle #1 was fired, light went out in fire handle. Airport fire rescue people responded expeditiously along with air carrier maintenance. Air carrier maintenance later informed us that the generator had melted down. All passenger evacuate/evacuationed through forward entry door in orderly manner with no injuries.

Title: FLC OF A B727-247 EXPERIENCED AN ENG FIRE DURING TAXI TO GATE CAUSED BY A FAULTY GENERATOR ALTERNATOR. FIRE BOTTLES WERE DISPENSED AND FIRE PUT OUT. PAX WERE EVACED THROUGH THE FORWARD ENTRANCE DOOR WITH NO INJURIES. ENG FIRE WAS CAUSED BY A 'GENERATOR MELTDOWN.'
