Narrative:

So noticed 500 pounds fuel imbalance between tank #1 and #3. Began xferring from #3 to #1 by opening #1 and #3 fuel xfeeds and shutting off #1 boost pumps. Midway through xfer the captain requested his crew meal and the so got up to get the meals. After distributing the meals the so noted the #1 and #3 tanks and shut the xfeeds and inadvertently forgot to turn the #1 fuel boost pumps back on. This would have been easily recognizable if the boost pump low pressure lighting had not been set for night operations. Approximately 10 mins later the captain asked if we lost an engine. There were no other cockpit indications except for the #1 RPM at approximately 70% with #2 and #3 at approximately 85%. The so began the immediate action procedures and got out the engine failure checklist. The captain xferred controls to the first officer and requested a descent to FL240 and informed center that we had an engine loss. Upon going through the engine failure and air start checklists the so discovered the boost pumps off and informed the captain that the failure was self-induced. After a successful restart a request for a climb back to FL350 was given. The crew decided that the malfunction was self-induced and no engine problems remained and continuing the mission was prudent. The remainder of the flight was uneventful.

Title: FLC OF LGT HAS ENG FAIL WHEN SO XFERS FUEL BUT NEGLECTS TO TURN THE FUEL BOOST PUMPS ON WHEN TASK COMPLETED. REQUEST DSCNT AND RESTART ENG.

Narrative: SO NOTICED 500 LBS FUEL IMBALANCE BTWN TANK #1 AND #3. BEGAN XFERRING FROM #3 TO #1 BY OPENING #1 AND #3 FUEL XFEEDS AND SHUTTING OFF #1 BOOST PUMPS. MIDWAY THROUGH XFER THE CAPT REQUESTED HIS CREW MEAL AND THE SO GOT UP TO GET THE MEALS. AFTER DISTRIBUTING THE MEALS THE SO NOTED THE #1 AND #3 TANKS AND SHUT THE XFEEDS AND INADVERTENTLY FORGOT TO TURN THE #1 FUEL BOOST PUMPS BACK ON. THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN EASILY RECOGNIZABLE IF THE BOOST PUMP LOW PRESSURE LIGHTING HAD NOT BEEN SET FOR NIGHT OPS. APPROX 10 MINS LATER THE CAPT ASKED IF WE LOST AN ENG. THERE WERE NO OTHER COCKPIT INDICATIONS EXCEPT FOR THE #1 RPM AT APPROX 70% WITH #2 AND #3 AT APPROX 85%. THE SO BEGAN THE IMMEDIATE ACTION PROCS AND GOT OUT THE ENG FAILURE CHKLIST. THE CAPT XFERRED CTLS TO THE FO AND REQUESTED A DSCNT TO FL240 AND INFORMED CTR THAT WE HAD AN ENG LOSS. UPON GOING THROUGH THE ENG FAILURE AND AIR START CHKLISTS THE SO DISCOVERED THE BOOST PUMPS OFF AND INFORMED THE CAPT THAT THE FAILURE WAS SELF-INDUCED. AFTER A SUCCESSFUL RESTART A REQUEST FOR A CLB BACK TO FL350 WAS GIVEN. THE CREW DECIDED THAT THE MALFUNCTION WAS SELF-INDUCED AND NO ENG PROBS REMAINED AND CONTINUING THE MISSION WAS PRUDENT. THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT WAS UNEVENTFUL.
