Narrative:
On takeoff approximately 300-400 ft AGL received master warning and light for tailpipe hot. Memory item calls to retard power lever to 10-20% torque and see if light will go out. Retarded power lever and continued climb out to approximately 3000 ft MSL. Light remained on. Told center we would like to level at 3000 ft MSL -- went through checklist which instructed us to shut down engine. Shutdown per abnormal checklist, declared an emergency, asked for crash fire rescue equipment and returned to land at msp (ILS approach). Situation went exactly as training from simulator. ATC was very helpful and gave us perfect vectors to intercept ILS. Landing and taxi were uneventful.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A SAAB SF340A DECLARED AN EMER AND RETURNED TO LAND AFTER 1 ENG WAS SHUT DOWN DUE TO A 'HOT TAIL PIPE' LIGHT COMING ON DURING INITIAL CLB. 'TEXTBOOK' HANDLING OF EMER BY FLC, ATC.
Narrative: ON TKOF APPROX 300-400 FT AGL RECEIVED MASTER WARNING AND LIGHT FOR TAILPIPE HOT. MEMORY ITEM CALLS TO RETARD PWR LEVER TO 10-20% TORQUE AND SEE IF LIGHT WILL GO OUT. RETARDED PWR LEVER AND CONTINUED CLB OUT TO APPROX 3000 FT MSL. LIGHT REMAINED ON. TOLD CTR WE WOULD LIKE TO LEVEL AT 3000 FT MSL -- WENT THROUGH CHKLIST WHICH INSTRUCTED US TO SHUT DOWN ENG. SHUTDOWN PER ABNORMAL CHKLIST, DECLARED AN EMER, ASKED FOR CFR AND RETURNED TO LAND AT MSP (ILS APCH). SIT WENT EXACTLY AS TRAINING FROM SIMULATOR. ATC WAS VERY HELPFUL AND GAVE US PERFECT VECTORS TO INTERCEPT ILS. LNDG AND TAXI WERE UNEVENTFUL.
