S80 flight crew overshot their assigned altitude of FL180 by 300 ft. As PIC realizes error, the controller simply assigns a new, higher altitude. Lack of coordination in cockpit. First officer was hand flying aircraft at the time.

Narrative:
ATC facility: ZNY. Location: lake henry. First officer hand flying in climb to FL180. At FL182, I noticed he had not leveled off at FL180. Climb was stopped at FL183. At same time, controller reclred us to FL230. No comment was made by controller. At leveloff, I was setting up navigation radio for next VOR. Should have paid more attention to leveloff altitude, especially since first officer was hand flying aircraft.
