Narrative:

Obtained clearance and contacted metering while on the FBO ramp at ewr. We were told to monitor ground as the captain started to taxi toward the taxiway from the FBO ramp. As we left the ramp and entered what is labeled as 'north ramp' on the charts, we were informed by ground that we had taxied onto a taxiway without clearance. We saw no ramp/taxiway demarcation stripes on the pavement, nor is there a sign or a pair of hold lights, which really are needed. The area is torn up due to construction, there are several marked vehicle lanes, and the area is used as a helipad, but has no helipad markings. There is a dangerous mixture of traffic in a confined area, and it is very confusing as to what starts and stops where.
