Narrative:
Maximum gross takeoff den. At V1 speed, the left main tires came apart and left engine ingested same. Left engine began to experience compressor stalls, reduced power until engine stabilized 1.4 EPR. Declared an emergency and briefed flight attendants for possible evacuate/evacuation. On landing the left main was unsafe, executed the appropriate checklist for 'landing with unsafe gear' but added one step which didn't hurt but was not part of checklist. The 'emergency landing gear extension' lever. Normally this is a hydraulic type function but sometimes on the MD80 unrelated items fix unrelated problems. We landed with no need for evacuate/evacuation, no fire, smoke, etc, and no injuries.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD80 ON TKOF AT V1 DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO THE L MAIN GEAR TIRES COMING APART AND TIRE FRAGMENTS INGESTED INTO #1 ENG.
Narrative: MAX GROSS TKOF DEN. AT V1 SPD, THE L MAIN TIRES CAME APART AND L ENG INGESTED SAME. L ENG BEGAN TO EXPERIENCE COMPRESSOR STALLS, REDUCED PWR UNTIL ENG STABILIZED 1.4 EPR. DECLARED AN EMER AND BRIEFED FLT ATTENDANTS FOR POSSIBLE EVAC. ON LNDG THE L MAIN WAS UNSAFE, EXECUTED THE APPROPRIATE CHKLIST FOR 'LNDG WITH UNSAFE GEAR' BUT ADDED ONE STEP WHICH DIDN'T HURT BUT WAS NOT PART OF CHKLIST. THE 'EMER LNDG GEAR EXTENSION' LEVER. NORMALLY THIS IS A HYD TYPE FUNCTION BUT SOMETIMES ON THE MD80 UNRELATED ITEMS FIX UNRELATED PROBS. WE LANDED WITH NO NEED FOR EVAC, NO FIRE, SMOKE, ETC, AND NO INJURIES.
