Narrative:
Cle to mdw, received taxi clearance to runway 23R via taxiway U and runway 28. We held short of runway 23L by choice so as not to place ourselves on an active runway. Tower then told us to taxi up to and hold short of runway 23R with landing traffic about 3 NM out. Due to close proximity of runway 23R hold short line on taxiway Z to runway 23L, we were beyond it before we realized the error. Tower realized it quickly and had final traffic go around and put us into position and hold. Although the hold lines are clearly marked, the placement of runway 23R hold short line places an aircraft on runway 23L. Not expecting to do so, the captain was looking further ahead for the hold short line as we passed over it. Looking for the arrival traffic on runway 23R also contributed as a distraction. Just as we were about to report our mistake, tower control took over quickly and effectively to ensure a safe response to the situation. The traffic on final was about 1-2 NM out when told to go around.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR FLC IN AN MLG WAS TOLD TO CROSS RWY 23L ON TXWY Z AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 23R. THE FLC DID NOT REALIZE THAT THE HOLD LINE FOR RWY 23R WAS VERY CLOSE TO THE TWR THAT THEY WERE XING (RWY 23L) AND THEY CROSSED IT. THE TFC ON FINAL APCH TO RWY 23R WAS TOLD TO GO AROUND. THE FLC STATES THAT IN ORDER TO HOLD SHORT OF THE RWY 23R HOLD LINE THE ACFT WOULD HAVE TO REMAIN ON RWY 23L.
Narrative: CLE TO MDW, RECEIVED TAXI CLRNC TO RWY 23R VIA TXWY U AND RWY 28. WE HELD SHORT OF RWY 23L BY CHOICE SO AS NOT TO PLACE OURSELVES ON AN ACTIVE RWY. TWR THEN TOLD US TO TAXI UP TO AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 23R WITH LNDG TFC ABOUT 3 NM OUT. DUE TO CLOSE PROX OF RWY 23R HOLD SHORT LINE ON TXWY Z TO RWY 23L, WE WERE BEYOND IT BEFORE WE REALIZED THE ERROR. TWR REALIZED IT QUICKLY AND HAD FINAL TFC GO AROUND AND PUT US INTO POS AND HOLD. ALTHOUGH THE HOLD LINES ARE CLRLY MARKED, THE PLACEMENT OF RWY 23R HOLD SHORT LINE PLACES AN ACFT ON RWY 23L. NOT EXPECTING TO DO SO, THE CAPT WAS LOOKING FURTHER AHEAD FOR THE HOLD SHORT LINE AS WE PASSED OVER IT. LOOKING FOR THE ARR TFC ON RWY 23R ALSO CONTRIBUTED AS A DISTR. JUST AS WE WERE ABOUT TO RPT OUR MISTAKE, TWR CTL TOOK OVER QUICKLY AND EFFECTIVELY TO ENSURE A SAFE RESPONSE TO THE SIT. THE TFC ON FINAL WAS ABOUT 1-2 NM OUT WHEN TOLD TO GO AROUND.
