Narrative:
Inbound for nel, reported 12 NM out (just departed from mjx airspace). Requested straight in for runway 33. Tower replied 'say again, aircraft X.' again said, 'lakehurst tower this is aircraft X request to land straight in runway 33.' I thought tower said report 3 mi final. Reported 3 mi final then instructed to make left 360 degree turn for spacing. 360 degree executed. Tower reported, 'cleared to land.' landed, exited, tuned into ground control. Instructed to 'taxi to parking.' upon parking aircraft was instructed to report to operations. Operations said I was instructed to report the class D airspace not 3 mi final -- also said 360 degree turn was for traffic conflict. They requested copy of my private pilot certificate. I believe conflicts arose due to poor radio in aircraft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: C172 ACFT ENTERING CLASS D AIRSPACE PVT PLT FAILED TO CALL AND FAILED TO FOLLOW TWR INSTRUCTIONS TO TURN FOR TFC. GND CTLR INSTRUCTED TO CONTACT OPS.
Narrative: INBOUND FOR NEL, RPTED 12 NM OUT (JUST DEPARTED FROM MJX AIRSPACE). REQUESTED STRAIGHT IN FOR RWY 33. TWR REPLIED 'SAY AGAIN, ACFT X.' AGAIN SAID, 'LAKEHURST TWR THIS IS ACFT X REQUEST TO LAND STRAIGHT IN RWY 33.' I THOUGHT TWR SAID RPT 3 MI FINAL. RPTED 3 MI FINAL THEN INSTRUCTED TO MAKE L 360 DEG TURN FOR SPACING. 360 DEG EXECUTED. TWR RPTED, 'CLRED TO LAND.' LANDED, EXITED, TUNED INTO GND CTL. INSTRUCTED TO 'TAXI TO PARKING.' UPON PARKING ACFT WAS INSTRUCTED TO RPT TO OPS. OPS SAID I WAS INSTRUCTED TO RPT THE CLASS D AIRSPACE NOT 3 MI FINAL -- ALSO SAID 360 DEG TURN WAS FOR TFC CONFLICT. THEY REQUESTED COPY OF MY PVT PLT CERTIFICATE. I BELIEVE CONFLICTS AROSE DUE TO POOR RADIO IN ACFT.
