Narrative:
Due to some confusion at the local position with a new strip display system, a DC3 was departed from runway 10. The local controller observed the DC3 on eastbound heading, 2 mi east, then departed a BE18 same runway eastbound by stating that aircraft ahead is also eastbound. The local controller observed departure corridor runway 8 clear and departed B727 off runway 8 northbound. The B727 pilot on takeoff climb observed DC3 off his right make a left turn so the B727 pilot initiated his left turn earlier than expected to keep the DC3 in sight. The DC3 pilot observed the B727 turn left and kept his course parallel to the B727. Radar and VFR separation was maintained. Suggestion to prevent similar action from recurring, even though separation was maintained. Local controller should make absolutely sure all information on aircraft is displayed and checked prior to issuing a takeoff clearance since the DC3 was on a wbound flight plan even though he flew 2 mi east prior to commencing his left turn. Also, it would be a safe practice for pilots to advise ATC that they are turning when their route of flight crosses the departure end of another runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CTLR RELEASED A DC3 EXPECTING THE ACFT TO FLY EBOUND, THEN RELEASED A B727 NBOUND ON ANOTHER RWY. THE DC3 TURNED L 2 MI E OF THE ARPT REQUIRING THE B727 TO TAKE EVASIVE ACTION BY TURNING L. THE CTLR CLAIMS THAT A NEW STRIP DISPLAY SYS CONTRIBUTED TO THE ROUTING CONFUSION.
Narrative: DUE TO SOME CONFUSION AT THE LCL POS WITH A NEW STRIP DISPLAY SYS, A DC3 WAS DEPARTED FROM RWY 10. THE LCL CTLR OBSERVED THE DC3 ON EBOUND HDG, 2 MI E, THEN DEPARTED A BE18 SAME RWY EBOUND BY STATING THAT ACFT AHEAD IS ALSO EBOUND. THE LCL CTLR OBSERVED DEP CORRIDOR RWY 8 CLR AND DEPARTED B727 OFF RWY 8 NBOUND. THE B727 PLT ON TKOF CLB OBSERVED DC3 OFF HIS R MAKE A L TURN SO THE B727 PLT INITIATED HIS L TURN EARLIER THAN EXPECTED TO KEEP THE DC3 IN SIGHT. THE DC3 PLT OBSERVED THE B727 TURN L AND KEPT HIS COURSE PARALLEL TO THE B727. RADAR AND VFR SEPARATION WAS MAINTAINED. SUGGESTION TO PREVENT SIMILAR ACTION FROM RECURRING, EVEN THOUGH SEPARATION WAS MAINTAINED. LCL CTLR SHOULD MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE ALL INFO ON ACFT IS DISPLAYED AND CHKED PRIOR TO ISSUING A TKOF CLRNC SINCE THE DC3 WAS ON A WBOUND FLT PLAN EVEN THOUGH HE FLEW 2 MI E PRIOR TO COMMENCING HIS L TURN. ALSO, IT WOULD BE A SAFE PRACTICE FOR PLTS TO ADVISE ATC THAT THEY ARE TURNING WHEN THEIR RTE OF FLT CROSSES THE DEP END OF ANOTHER RWY.
