Narrative:
We were holding short of runway 34R at sea. We thought we were cleared into position and hold runway 34R. First officer read back our flight number and repeated 'position and hold runway 34R.' shortly thereafter the tower was clearing a commuter type air carrier for takeoff runway 34R. No response from commuter airplane so my first officer told the tower we were in position (flight number) and were cleared on runway previously. He told us to taxi off the runway and stated we were not cleared on the runway.

Narrative: WE WERE HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 34R AT SEA. WE THOUGHT WE WERE CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD RWY 34R. FO READ BACK OUR FLT NUMBER AND REPEATED 'POS AND HOLD RWY 34R.' SHORTLY THEREAFTER THE TWR WAS CLRING A COMMUTER TYPE ACR FOR TKOF RWY 34R. NO RESPONSE FROM COMMUTER AIRPLANE SO MY FO TOLD THE TWR WE WERE IN POS (FLT NUMBER) AND WERE CLRED ON RWY PREVIOUSLY. HE TOLD US TO TAXI OFF THE RWY AND STATED WE WERE NOT CLRED ON THE RWY.
