Narrative:
On socal TRACON descending on sadde arrival to lax, encountered moderate wake turbulence. Asked controller who we were following -- B747 12 O'clock 8 mi. Received no wake turbulence cautionary advisories per 7110.65 until on tower frequency. Called TRACON. They stated that they 'do not normally' give advisories if more than 6 mi in trail. I told them that we could have injured the flight attendants -- they were up in the aisle at the time of the encounter. The advisories are needed at more than the minimum separation distance.
