Narrative:
Operating as an air carrier flight xyz and en route to fll on the fortl 3 STAR, we acknowledged a clearance to cross kubic intersection at 8000 ft. We initiated a descent at that time. Shortly thereafter, ZMA asked us to say altitude. We did -- it was FL215 and descending. Center responded 'negative, descend to FL200.' we complied with instructions. Possible confusion with another air carrier with xyz in call sign who was ahead and en route to fll as well. No conflict or other problems arose. We were unsure who made the mistake -- us or controller.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR B737 FLC COPIED A CLRNC MEANT FOR ANOTHER ACR. THE LAST 3 NUMBERS IN BOTH CALL SIGNS WERE THE SAME.
Narrative: OPERATING AS AN ACR FLT XYZ AND ENRTE TO FLL ON THE FORTL 3 STAR, WE ACKNOWLEDGED A CLRNC TO CROSS KUBIC INTXN AT 8000 FT. WE INITIATED A DSCNT AT THAT TIME. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, ZMA ASKED US TO SAY ALT. WE DID -- IT WAS FL215 AND DSNDING. CTR RESPONDED 'NEGATIVE, DSND TO FL200.' WE COMPLIED WITH INSTRUCTIONS. POSSIBLE CONFUSION WITH ANOTHER ACR WITH XYZ IN CALL SIGN WHO WAS AHEAD AND ENRTE TO FLL AS WELL. NO CONFLICT OR OTHER PROBS AROSE. WE WERE UNSURE WHO MADE THE MISTAKE -- US OR CTLR.
