Narrative:
We were level at 6000 ft heading wbound for an ILS to runway 8L at atl, GA. Our call sign was wwyw. We were being vectored by atl approach control. We received a clearance to turn left to a heading of 180 degrees and descend to 5000 ft. The captain acknowledged the clearance on the radio and I made the turn and started to descend. The controller was not annunciating his words very well and apparently we took another aircraft's clearance (air carrier xyw). We were told to stop our descent and turn back to the right heading 320 degrees. We never did get a TA or an RA on the TCASII, so a traffic conflict was not a factor. We were then told to descend to 5000 ft and a heading of 270 degrees. Landed normally.

Title: AN ACR FLC ACCEPTS A CLRNC MEANT FOR ANOTHER ACFT WHEN THE PIC, PNF, MISUNDERSTANDS THE APCH CTLR'S CALL SIGN ENUNCIATION AT ATL, GA.
Narrative: WE WERE LEVEL AT 6000 FT HDG WBOUND FOR AN ILS TO RWY 8L AT ATL, GA. OUR CALL SIGN WAS WWYW. WE WERE BEING VECTORED BY ATL APCH CTL. WE RECEIVED A CLRNC TO TURN L TO A HDG OF 180 DEGS AND DSND TO 5000 FT. THE CAPT ACKNOWLEDGED THE CLRNC ON THE RADIO AND I MADE THE TURN AND STARTED TO DSND. THE CTLR WAS NOT ANNUNCIATING HIS WORDS VERY WELL AND APPARENTLY WE TOOK ANOTHER ACFT'S CLRNC (ACR XYW). WE WERE TOLD TO STOP OUR DSCNT AND TURN BACK TO THE R HDG 320 DEGS. WE NEVER DID GET A TA OR AN RA ON THE TCASII, SO A TFC CONFLICT WAS NOT A FACTOR. WE WERE THEN TOLD TO DSND TO 5000 FT AND A HDG OF 270 DEGS. LANDED NORMALLY.
