Narrative:
After gear retraction EICAS message, left hydraulic quantity. Left hydraulic quantity indicated zero. Maintained aircraft confign, declared emergency and returned to land. Gear and flap operation normal. Landing normal. Parked aircraft on taxiway, shut down left engine. Had ground crash fire rescue equipment crew inspect aircraft as smoke was reported coming from left gear. Taxied aircraft to gate with crash fire rescue equipment crew following close behind since no fire or damage was found other than residual hydraulic leak and smoke which both subsided shortly after aircraft was parked.

Narrative: AFTER GEAR RETRACTION EICAS MESSAGE, L HYD QUANTITY. L HYD QUANTITY INDICATED ZERO. MAINTAINED ACFT CONFIGN, DECLARED EMER AND RETURNED TO LAND. GEAR AND FLAP OP NORMAL. LNDG NORMAL. PARKED ACFT ON TXWY, SHUT DOWN L ENG. HAD GND CFR CREW INSPECT ACFT AS SMOKE WAS RPTED COMING FROM L GEAR. TAXIED ACFT TO GATE WITH CFR CREW FOLLOWING CLOSE BEHIND SINCE NO FIRE OR DAMAGE WAS FOUND OTHER THAN RESIDUAL HYD LEAK AND SMOKE WHICH BOTH SUBSIDED SHORTLY AFTER ACFT WAS PARKED.
