Narrative:
At 6000 ft on an IFR flight plan ATC assigned the 359 degree radial of palm beach (palm beach was the final destination). I was flying at night over clouds. After I flew out of the area where the clouds were, I could see I was over water. My #6 engine cylinder had been showing erratic egt readings which I believed were from a probe that became defective, but I did not want to be over water while getting this reading. I requested ATC send me to the coast over land then fly the remaining 40 mi over land. The controller refused to change my route. I then told ATC of my erratic egt reading and again requested to be sent over the coast. ATC again refused and said my only alternative was to cancel IFR and go VFR. I then declared an emergency -- nature of emergency, ATC's clearance. I proceeded to fly over land and continued to the destination without any event.

Title: A BONANZA PLT WAS SENT ON AN OVERWATER ROUTING, IFR TO PBI. CTLR WOULD NOT GET HIM BACK OVER LAND AS HE HAD REFUSED THE PLT AN IFR RERTE. HE WAS NERVOUS ABOUT BEING OVER WATER AND USED HIS HIGH EGT FROM #6 CYLINDER AS AN EXCUSE FOR DECLARING AN EMER REROUTE.
