Narrative:
Normal landing and rollout on runway 19L. We exited the runway on the high speed D and were told to switch to ground. We were told to give way to another air carrier who was pointing at us, taxi light on, on taxiway D who would turn on taxiway F taxiing to runway 19L for departure. As I looked on the taxi (airport) diagram to figure out what the plan was, I heard an aircraft either taking off or going around on runway 19L. It was hard for me to tell if our tail section was actually clear of the runway since the MD88 is so long and we hadn't taxied very far on taxiway D. Neither the captain nor myself knew if an aircraft had been given position and hold after we landed or if we had an aircraft right behind us on approach. In other words, our situational awareness was much below that of what it should have been. And in the future, I will be more insistent that the captain not stop where we might still be blocking the runway if it is at all possible to safely do so.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF AN MD88 QUESTIONED IF THEY HAD STOPPED TOO SOON ON TXWY WHEN CLRING THE RWY SINCE THEY HEARD ANOTHER ACFT PASS OVER THEM DURING EITHER TKOF OR GAR. THE RPTR STATES THAT THEY WERE TOLD TO HOLD FOR OTHER TAXIING TFC PRIOR TO ENTERING THE TXWY FROM THE HIGH SPD TURNOFF.
Narrative: NORMAL LNDG AND ROLLOUT ON RWY 19L. WE EXITED THE RWY ON THE HIGH SPD D AND WERE TOLD TO SWITCH TO GND. WE WERE TOLD TO GIVE WAY TO ANOTHER ACR WHO WAS POINTING AT US, TAXI LIGHT ON, ON TXWY D WHO WOULD TURN ON TXWY F TAXIING TO RWY 19L FOR DEP. AS I LOOKED ON THE TAXI (ARPT) DIAGRAM TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE PLAN WAS, I HEARD AN ACFT EITHER TAKING OFF OR GOING AROUND ON RWY 19L. IT WAS HARD FOR ME TO TELL IF OUR TAIL SECTION WAS ACTUALLY CLR OF THE RWY SINCE THE MD88 IS SO LONG AND WE HADN'T TAXIED VERY FAR ON TXWY D. NEITHER THE CAPT NOR MYSELF KNEW IF AN ACFT HAD BEEN GIVEN POS AND HOLD AFTER WE LANDED OR IF WE HAD AN ACFT RIGHT BEHIND US ON APCH. IN OTHER WORDS, OUR SITUATIONAL AWARENESS WAS MUCH BELOW THAT OF WHAT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. AND IN THE FUTURE, I WILL BE MORE INSISTENT THAT THE CAPT NOT STOP WHERE WE MIGHT STILL BE BLOCKING THE RWY IF IT IS AT ALL POSSIBLE TO SAFELY DO SO.
