Narrative:
XA20Z, frequency 126.55, 5000 ft. ATC facility: dfw approach. Location: dfw 010 degree radial, 15 DME. Approaching dfw, descending out of 5000 ft, about 15 mi out for a visual approach, we were cleared for runway 17C visual. We were on a dogleg to final heading for the marker to turn final outside 7 mi for noise abatement. Crossed the marker and turned final, but lined up for runway 17R. I was flying the plane visually. We had the marker and the ILS both tuned and idented for runway 17C. Around 800 ft we realized our error and tower said that we were looking ok but we initiated a go around. We came back around and landed uneventfully on runway 17C. The WX was VFR with very little traffic and I became too complacent on following my instruments. Supplemental information from acn 392720: at about 1000 ft we both noticed GS indication on instruments not matching our visual cues and then realized we were lined up with runway 17R. This reinforces the policy to back up with navaids and to fight complacency, especially in VFR conditions.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN S80 FLIES A VISUAL APCH INTO DFW AND LINES UP FOR THE WRONG RWY. FLC EXECUTES A GAR AND MAKES ANOTHER APCH.
Narrative: XA20Z, FREQ 126.55, 5000 FT. ATC FACILITY: DFW APCH. LOCATION: DFW 010 DEG RADIAL, 15 DME. APCHING DFW, DSNDING OUT OF 5000 FT, ABOUT 15 MI OUT FOR A VISUAL APCH, WE WERE CLRED FOR RWY 17C VISUAL. WE WERE ON A DOGLEG TO FINAL HDG FOR THE MARKER TO TURN FINAL OUTSIDE 7 MI FOR NOISE ABATEMENT. CROSSED THE MARKER AND TURNED FINAL, BUT LINED UP FOR RWY 17R. I WAS FLYING THE PLANE VISUALLY. WE HAD THE MARKER AND THE ILS BOTH TUNED AND IDENTED FOR RWY 17C. AROUND 800 FT WE REALIZED OUR ERROR AND TWR SAID THAT WE WERE LOOKING OK BUT WE INITIATED A GAR. WE CAME BACK AROUND AND LANDED UNEVENTFULLY ON RWY 17C. THE WX WAS VFR WITH VERY LITTLE TFC AND I BECAME TOO COMPLACENT ON FOLLOWING MY INSTS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 392720: AT ABOUT 1000 FT WE BOTH NOTICED GS INDICATION ON INSTS NOT MATCHING OUR VISUAL CUES AND THEN REALIZED WE WERE LINED UP WITH RWY 17R. THIS REINFORCES THE POLICY TO BACK UP WITH NAVAIDS AND TO FIGHT COMPLACENCY, ESPECIALLY IN VFR CONDITIONS.
