Narrative:
After being cleared to pontiac, mi, via direct fort wayne, fort wayne transition, cruxx 2 arrival, I entered what I thought was the correct route into the FMS. About 3 mins after passing fwa VOR, center asked if we were flying the transition we had been assigned. I answered we were. He remarked that he showed us well right of course. When I looked at the arrival, I discovered I had entered a waypoint on another transition which was not on our route. After receiving a heading for pontiac, I realized I hadn't even read the narrative on the following page to explain the STAR. Having a pilot who was new to the plane this day had me more concerned with giving flight instruction than flying the plane. The best way to solve this problem would be to always read the narrative instead of looking solely at the overhead view.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF CPR SMT MISPROGRAMS THE FMS AND ENDS UP R OF COURSE. ATC CATCHES THE ERROR.
Narrative: AFTER BEING CLRED TO PONTIAC, MI, VIA DIRECT FORT WAYNE, FORT WAYNE TRANSITION, CRUXX 2 ARR, I ENTERED WHAT I THOUGHT WAS THE CORRECT RTE INTO THE FMS. ABOUT 3 MINS AFTER PASSING FWA VOR, CTR ASKED IF WE WERE FLYING THE TRANSITION WE HAD BEEN ASSIGNED. I ANSWERED WE WERE. HE REMARKED THAT HE SHOWED US WELL R OF COURSE. WHEN I LOOKED AT THE ARR, I DISCOVERED I HAD ENTERED A WAYPOINT ON ANOTHER TRANSITION WHICH WAS NOT ON OUR RTE. AFTER RECEIVING A HEADING FOR PONTIAC, I REALIZED I HADN'T EVEN READ THE NARRATIVE ON THE FOLLOWING PAGE TO EXPLAIN THE STAR. HAVING A PLT WHO WAS NEW TO THE PLANE THIS DAY HAD ME MORE CONCERNED WITH GIVING FLT INSTRUCTION THAN FLYING THE PLANE. THE BEST WAY TO SOLVE THIS PROB WOULD BE TO ALWAYS READ THE NARRATIVE INSTEAD OF LOOKING SOLELY AT THE OVERHEAD VIEW.
