Narrative:
Entering a long downwind at 800 ft above traffic pattern altitude, almost collided with aircraft taking off, departing the pattern. At least, I should have entered a shorter downwind at traffic pattern altitude. Best would have been 45 degrees or crosswind entry. Failure to properly enter pattern almost caused a midair. Other aircraft was a twin piper doing (I believe) closed pattern touch and goes.
