Narrative:
Level 7000 ft. First officer kicked off autoplt and turned right to 250 degrees. Captain switched frequency, looked up, saw altitude loss. Controller asked our altitude, '6600 ft.' said we were 'climbing back up,' he said, 'you're ok.' supplemental information from acn 396945: on approach to ord, controller gave us 250 degree heading and frequency change. I switched to approach control. As I switched, first officer selected autoplt off and a second later I heard altitude deviation horn. Looked up, lost 400 ft. Just as I pushed power up and said 'altitude,' approach controller asked our altitude. Gave us another heading for ILS approach. First officer was ex-military and hadn't flown much. First officer seat was his first assignment at air carrier. I briefed, 'in the future it is customary to inform other pilot what is being turned off or on.'

Title: A B727 FO TURNS OFF THE AUTOPLT TO MAKE A LEVEL TURN HDG CHANGE. IN THE PROCESS HE LOSES 400 FT. ALT WARNING AND CTLR STEP IN TO RECTIFY THE SIT. CAPT WAS ON A FREQ CHANGE.
Narrative: LEVEL 7000 FT. FO KICKED OFF AUTOPLT AND TURNED R TO 250 DEGS. CAPT SWITCHED FREQ, LOOKED UP, SAW ALT LOSS. CTLR ASKED OUR ALT, '6600 FT.' SAID WE WERE 'CLBING BACK UP,' HE SAID, 'YOU'RE OK.' SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 396945: ON APCH TO ORD, CTLR GAVE US 250 DEG HDG AND FREQ CHANGE. I SWITCHED TO APCH CTL. AS I SWITCHED, FO SELECTED AUTOPLT OFF AND A SECOND LATER I HEARD ALTDEV HORN. LOOKED UP, LOST 400 FT. JUST AS I PUSHED PWR UP AND SAID 'ALT,' APCH CTLR ASKED OUR ALT. GAVE US ANOTHER HDG FOR ILS APCH. FO WAS EX-MIL AND HADN'T FLOWN MUCH. FO SEAT WAS HIS FIRST ASSIGNMENT AT ACR. I BRIEFED, 'IN THE FUTURE IT IS CUSTOMARY TO INFORM OTHER PLT WHAT IS BEING TURNED OFF OR ON.'
