Narrative:
Climbing through FL318 to assigned altitude of FL350, center controller advised you are a little high, descend to FL310. I responded that our clearance was to FL350, and asked if he wanted us to descend to FL310. He responded affirmatively and called traffic (air carrier Y) at 12 NM and FL330. We confirmed with him that we were in a descent to FL310. Our assignment had been to FL350, and we read back that clearance to the controller. Both pilots heard the altitude assignment clearly. Controller error.

Narrative: CLBING THROUGH FL318 TO ASSIGNED ALT OF FL350, CENTER CTLR ADVISED YOU ARE A LITTLE HIGH, DSND TO FL310. I RESPONDED THAT OUR CLRNC WAS TO FL350, AND ASKED IF HE WANTED US TO DSND TO FL310. HE RESPONDED AFFIRMATIVELY AND CALLED TFC (ACR Y) AT 12 NM AND FL330. WE CONFIRMED WITH HIM THAT WE WERE IN A DSCNT TO FL310. OUR ASSIGNMENT HAD BEEN TO FL350, AND WE READ BACK THAT CLRNC TO THE CTLR. BOTH PLTS HEARD THE ALT ASSIGNMENT CLEARLY. CTLR ERROR.
