Narrative:

All mechanics should be made aware as a line maintenance mechanic you must be release qualified in order to defer aircraft from maintenance. Because of my situation an engineering notice was sent to all ZZZ mechanics of what you must go through in order to legally defer. Upon arrival to ZZZ, I had only worked in aircraft overhaul. ZZZ is a line station and works under different rules. Every mechanic that works a line station is trained in aircraft release procedures and is then qualified to release aircraft. To properly and legally defer aircraft at air carrier you must have completed this course. I worked at ZZZ for 9 months before I could receive this training for which I asked repeatedly for. The whole time in between I was unaware of this policy and had been deferring aircraft maintenance. The computer has a glitch in it and will allow me to do so if I enter my name and file number into the authority/authorized block. This is how I was trained by my fellow mechanics and lead mechanics who also did not know you had to be through this course. I don't feel that I have put any aircraft or passenger at risk for I followed all air carrier references and callouts for each deferral, and contacted all parties that need to be notified of each deferral.
