Narrative:
Aircraft #1 was assigned a route direct modesto locke 1 STAR to sfo at FL310. Aircraft #2 was on J84, laterally route separated from aircraft #1 climbing from FL280 to FL330. Aircraft #2 requested a direct route clearance and was issued direct cincinnati, which was a turn a few degrees further away from aircraft #1. Aircraft #1 had emergency 'east' equipment suffix, aircraft #2 had 'right' equipment suffix. Initially, aircraft #2's route appeared correct and I passed a flight plan manually plus a handoff to an adjacent facility, monitored 2 other aircraft for sequencing and separation along with aircraft #1, and sorted flight progress strips to xref against the 3D-upt comment forms we have. During this time, aircraft drifted south of course. I thought the drift was acceptable, but was proved wrong when aircraft #1 announced they were responding to a TCASII RA. They passed with 4.25 mi lateral separation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR B757 INBOUND TO SFO ON STAR RTE AT FL310. ACR L1011 OUTBOUND AT FL280 CLBING TO FL330 REQUESTED AND RECEIVED DIRECT ROUTING TO CVG. ARTCC RADAR CTLR BECAME AWARE OF LOSS OF SEPARATION WHEN ACR B757 ADVISED RESPONDING TO TCASII RA. SEPARATION WAS RECORDED AT 4 PT 25 NM.
Narrative: ACFT #1 WAS ASSIGNED A RTE DIRECT MODESTO LOCKE 1 STAR TO SFO AT FL310. ACFT #2 WAS ON J84, LATERALLY RTE SEPARATED FROM ACFT #1 CLBING FROM FL280 TO FL330. ACFT #2 REQUESTED A DIRECT RTE CLRNC AND WAS ISSUED DIRECT CINCINNATI, WHICH WAS A TURN A FEW DEGS FURTHER AWAY FROM ACFT #1. ACFT #1 HAD EMER 'E' EQUIP SUFFIX, ACFT #2 HAD 'R' EQUIP SUFFIX. INITIALLY, ACFT #2'S RTE APPEARED CORRECT AND I PASSED A FLT PLAN MANUALLY PLUS A HDOF TO AN ADJACENT FACILITY, MONITORED 2 OTHER ACFT FOR SEQUENCING AND SEPARATION ALONG WITH ACFT #1, AND SORTED FLT PROGRESS STRIPS TO XREF AGAINST THE 3D-UPT COMMENT FORMS WE HAVE. DURING THIS TIME, ACFT DRIFTED S OF COURSE. I THOUGHT THE DRIFT WAS ACCEPTABLE, BUT WAS PROVED WRONG WHEN ACFT #1 ANNOUNCED THEY WERE RESPONDING TO A TCASII RA. THEY PASSED WITH 4.25 MI LATERAL SEPARATION.
