Narrative:

Cleared for takeoff. While taking the runway, tower mentioned that he observed smoke from tail of aircraft. We had just shut down the APU and it's not unusual to see a little smoke when you shut down the APU. All cockpit indications were normal. We told the tower to advise us if he saw any more smoke and we continued without incident. Upon arrival at the next destination, I discussed the matter with maintenance. They put the APU on MEL and programmed it for repair. In hindsight, a more conservative response on my part would have been to return to the gate and confer with maintenance before departure. However, since the APU was shut down and indications were normal, my judgement was to continue until the next station.
