Narrative:

Flight was vectored to final approach course and cleared to descend to 3000 ft and cleared for ILS runway 8 approach. Localizer captured and flight guidance/autoplt was properly armed for altitude capture and localizer and GS capture. The flight guidance system either failed to capture the 3000 ft altitude or lost the capture. Likewise with the GS capture. During the time of GS capture at 3000 ft the pilots were distraction by a slower gear extension on 1 landing gear. Descent continued below the 2000 ft minimum altitude. 1 altitude alert warning was received. However, this is normal when the correct missed approach altitude is set and after GS is captured. We noted we were below our 2000 ft altitude at about 1400 ft MSL and tower also called to give us our low altitude warning. We corrected, bottoming out at about 1200-1300 ft MSL. We climbed to reintercept the GS for remainder of approach. Lessons learned: closer monitoring of flight guidance status, especially when something diverts attention away from monitoring. Change MD80 flight altitude warning system so that it is not normal to receive and disregard an altitude alert warning during final approach. Also, landing checklist calls for captain (PF) to verify gear position. In this case, we were both waiting for and monitoring the red gear warning light.

IN THIS CASE, WE WERE BOTH WAITING FOR AND MONITORING THE RED GEAR WARNING LIGHT.
