Narrative:
After finishing a 2.8 hour training flight, our engine sputtered twice. A quick check of the instruments showed our fuel was almost empty. We made a precautionary landing on an abandoned airstrip south of wheeler army air field. Once on the ground, we phoned for fuel to be brought out. It was, and the plane was flown back to the FBO of origin. Basically, I flew the plane too long and ended up not having the reserve fuel required. This was due to a lack of adequate preflight planning, and failure to monitor our fuel situation.
