Narrative:
During approach to runway 5 (ILS), a severe thunderstorm was over airport. Tower reported prior aircraft had severe turbulence. During the approach, tower advised cloud to ground lightning. During the landing process, looking up and back to instruments, the rain was so intense the windshield wipers were not effective. The right runway lights were mistaken for the left runway lights. I landed right of centerline and hydroplaned off of runway 200 ft with right gear off in grass. Clipped light and was able to get back on runway. No damage to aircraft, other than broken rod on shimmy damper. Heavy rain and turbulence were major factors (thunderstorm).
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF AN SMT TURBOPROP TWIN RAN OFF THE SIDE OF THE RWY DURING LNDG DUE HVY RAIN BLOCKING HIS VISUAL REF TO THE RWY. IN DOING SO, THE ACFT NOSEWHEEL RAN OVER A RWY EDGE LIGHT CAUSING MINOR DAMAGE TO HIS NOSE GEAR SHIMMY DAMPER.
Narrative: DURING APCH TO RWY 5 (ILS), A SEVERE TSTM WAS OVER ARPT. TWR RPTED PRIOR ACFT HAD SEVERE TURB. DURING THE APCH, TWR ADVISED CLOUD TO GND LIGHTNING. DURING THE LNDG PROCESS, LOOKING UP AND BACK TO INSTS, THE RAIN WAS SO INTENSE THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WERE NOT EFFECTIVE. THE R RWY LIGHTS WERE MISTAKEN FOR THE L RWY LIGHTS. I LANDED R OF CTRLINE AND HYDROPLANED OFF OF RWY 200 FT WITH R GEAR OFF IN GRASS. CLIPPED LIGHT AND WAS ABLE TO GET BACK ON RWY. NO DAMAGE TO ACFT, OTHER THAN BROKEN ROD ON SHIMMY DAMPER. HVY RAIN AND TURB WERE MAJOR FACTORS (TSTM).
