Narrative:
Taking off on runway 22, I was cleared for takeoff, right turn 230 degrees, climb to 3000 ft. I turned right 230 degrees and climbed up to 3000 ft. Just before handoff to departure the tower wondered why I didn't turn right 330 degrees, so I asked tower if they wanted me right 230 degrees or 330 degrees. The tower wanted me now on 330 degree heading which was not what they cleared me the first time. So now I turned to 330 degrees and was handed to departure. Soon after I contacted departure, on 330 degree heading, 3000 ft, the controller told me to turn left 290 degrees immediately and look for traffic 3 clock at 3200 ft. As I looked to right, I saw this king air just pass under my airplane. It was close, about 400 ft. I feel the tower did the mistake of changing the clearance from 230 degrees to 330 degrees. I don't know if the tower just made a mistake or the tower and departure control didn't communicate to each other. If I would have stayed on 230 degree heading this would have never happened.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SMT ATX ACFT DEPARTING ARPT HAD CONFLICTING HDG CLRNCS. RPTR HEARD 230 DEG HDG AND, ACCORDING TO RPTR, TWR WONDERED WHY HE DIDN'T TURN TO 330 DEGS, SO RPTR ASKED IF THE HDG WAS 230 DEGS OR 330 DEGS, TO WHICH TWR REPLIED '330 DEGS.' SHORTLY AFTER CONTACTING DEP CTLR, HE WAS GIVEN AN IMMEDIATE 290 DEG HDG JUST AS A KING AIR PASSED UNDER HIS ACFT.
Narrative: TAKING OFF ON RWY 22, I WAS CLRED FOR TKOF, R TURN 230 DEGS, CLB TO 3000 FT. I TURNED R 230 DEGS AND CLBED UP TO 3000 FT. JUST BEFORE HDOF TO DEP THE TWR WONDERED WHY I DIDN'T TURN R 330 DEGS, SO I ASKED TWR IF THEY WANTED ME R 230 DEGS OR 330 DEGS. THE TWR WANTED ME NOW ON 330 DEG HDG WHICH WAS NOT WHAT THEY CLRED ME THE FIRST TIME. SO NOW I TURNED TO 330 DEGS AND WAS HANDED TO DEP. SOON AFTER I CONTACTED DEP, ON 330 DEG HDG, 3000 FT, THE CTLR TOLD ME TO TURN L 290 DEGS IMMEDIATELY AND LOOK FOR TFC 3 CLOCK AT 3200 FT. AS I LOOKED TO R, I SAW THIS KING AIR JUST PASS UNDER MY AIRPLANE. IT WAS CLOSE, ABOUT 400 FT. I FEEL THE TWR DID THE MISTAKE OF CHANGING THE CLRNC FROM 230 DEGS TO 330 DEGS. I DON'T KNOW IF THE TWR JUST MADE A MISTAKE OR THE TWR AND DEP CTL DIDN'T COMMUNICATE TO EACH OTHER. IF I WOULD HAVE STAYED ON 230 DEG HDG THIS WOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED.
