Encountered turbulence at FL350 en route from dfw to phx (possibly short term severe) while turning to avoid radar return. Advised by dispatcher that aircraft was in vicinity of jetstream. Experienced loss of approximately 1000 ft and airspeed variations of 20-30 KTS.

Title: CAPT OF AN MD88 LOST 1000 FT DURING CRUISE WHILE DIVERTING AROUND A WX CELL DUE TO SEVERE TURB. CAPT IMMEDIATELY RETURNED TO ASSIGNED ALT.
Narrative: ENCOUNTERED TURB AT FL350 ENRTE FROM DFW TO PHX (POSSIBLY SHORT TERM SEVERE) WHILE TURNING TO AVOID RADAR RETURN. ADVISED BY DISPATCHER THAT ACFT WAS IN VICINITY OF JETSTREAM. EXPERIENCED LOSS OF APPROX 1000 FT AND AIRSPD VARIATIONS OF 20-30 KTS.
