Narrative:
Departed slc to san VFR. Upon leaving class B airspace, engaged autoplt and experienced problems with GPS. Became preoccupied with GPS problem. Aircraft became IMC, disengaged autoplt and hand flew out of IMC to VMC to higher altitude to avoid ice. The problem occurred when the autoplt was engaged and started a steady climb while preoccupied with GPS problem. The problem could have been prevented if attention was on flying the aircraft first and dealing with other aircraft equipment second. This was a lesson well learned which I will not repeat again. In the future I will stay on departure frequency so if a problem arises they can be easily contacted without having to look up frequencys.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF A CESSNA 182RG ENTERED CLOUDS AND CLBED FROM CRUISE ALT TO AVOID ICE DURING A VFR FLT. INADVERTENT ENCOUNTER WAS CAUSED BY ATTEMPTING TO CORRECT A PROB WITH GPS NAV EQUIP.
Narrative: DEPARTED SLC TO SAN VFR. UPON LEAVING CLASS B AIRSPACE, ENGAGED AUTOPLT AND EXPERIENCED PROBS WITH GPS. BECAME PREOCCUPIED WITH GPS PROB. ACFT BECAME IMC, DISENGAGED AUTOPLT AND HAND FLEW OUT OF IMC TO VMC TO HIGHER ALT TO AVOID ICE. THE PROB OCCURRED WHEN THE AUTOPLT WAS ENGAGED AND STARTED A STEADY CLB WHILE PREOCCUPIED WITH GPS PROB. THE PROB COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED IF ATTN WAS ON FLYING THE ACFT FIRST AND DEALING WITH OTHER ACFT EQUIP SECOND. THIS WAS A LESSON WELL LEARNED WHICH I WILL NOT REPEAT AGAIN. IN THE FUTURE I WILL STAY ON DEP FREQ SO IF A PROB ARISES THEY CAN BE EASILY CONTACTED WITHOUT HAVING TO LOOK UP FREQS.
