Narrative:

Given a vector of 036 degrees to intercept airway. HSI sector was on GPS instead of VOR. Passenger who is also a pilot was tweaking the mixture to lean engine and carrying on a constant stream of comments about egt's and CAT's on new engine installation. When controller corrected vector to 340 degrees, I turned to 034 degrees still thinking airway was to the right. Controller came on shortly and requested firmly I turn to 340 degrees to avoid conflict with AFB. I immediately turned and saw error on HSI selector.
