Narrative:
Airline flight air carrier X was operating under bna approach control inbound to land at bna, approximately 35 mi northeast of bna. The flight was cleared from 10000 ft to 4000 ft and cleared for ILS approach runway 20R. Passing approximately 6300 ft the controller cleared the flight to 3000 ft and to expedite through 5000 ft. Traffic was also pointed out at 12 O'clock position, 10 NM at 5000 ft. As the crew of air carrier X increased the descent the TCASII issued a TA. The crew had the traffic on TCASII but could not obtain a visual of the traffic. Within a few seconds, the TCASII issued an RA to 'reduce descent' followed by a 'climb, climb' alert. At some point the controller had given the other aircraft a turn to avoid us. As we stopped our descent and began to climb the crew got a visual on the other aircraft. The other aircraft passed off to our right about 2 mi and about 300 ft below our altitude. Our altitude was approximately 5300 ft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: APCH CTLR AT BNA INSTRUCTED ARRIVING ACFT TO EXPEDITE DSCNT THROUGH 5000 FT WHICH WAS OCCUPIED BY OPPOSITE DIRECTION TFC.
Narrative: AIRLINE FLT ACR X WAS OPERATING UNDER BNA APCH CTL INBOUND TO LAND AT BNA, APPROX 35 MI NE OF BNA. THE FLT WAS CLRED FROM 10000 FT TO 4000 FT AND CLRED FOR ILS APCH RWY 20R. PASSING APPROX 6300 FT THE CTLR CLRED THE FLT TO 3000 FT AND TO EXPEDITE THROUGH 5000 FT. TFC WAS ALSO POINTED OUT AT 12 O'CLOCK POS, 10 NM AT 5000 FT. AS THE CREW OF ACR X INCREASED THE DSCNT THE TCASII ISSUED A TA. THE CREW HAD THE TFC ON TCASII BUT COULD NOT OBTAIN A VISUAL OF THE TFC. WITHIN A FEW SECONDS, THE TCASII ISSUED AN RA TO 'REDUCE DSCNT' FOLLOWED BY A 'CLB, CLB' ALERT. AT SOME POINT THE CTLR HAD GIVEN THE OTHER ACFT A TURN TO AVOID US. AS WE STOPPED OUR DSCNT AND BEGAN TO CLB THE CREW GOT A VISUAL ON THE OTHER ACFT. THE OTHER ACFT PASSED OFF TO OUR R ABOUT 2 MI AND ABOUT 300 FT BELOW OUR ALT. OUR ALT WAS APPROX 5300 FT.
