Narrative:

Just after passing mkc (VOR) and deviating around level 3-4 thunderstorms, we were about 15-20 seconds from 'breaking out' of the other side of the line of storms when we encountered severe turbulence. One major jolt and then we were in the clear. The flight attendants were seated as well as all passenger. Previous flts had taken the same route with good results. After the encounter, 3 or 4 passenger complained of injuries (back injuries, allegedly). The flight continued uneventfully to denver. Supplemental information from acn 405628: we were deviating around thunderstorms using radar and visual methods. ATC had advised us that another flight had gone through the same area with a good ride in heavy rain. Encountered severe turbulence that disconnected the autoplt and autothrottles. 5 passenger complained of minor injuries. The whole encounter was over in 15 seconds.
