Narrative:
While cruising at 15500 ft, right engine developed roughness and started losing oil. Called ZFW, who was providing VFR flight following at the time, told them that we were diverting to adm airport and starting a VFR descent. When ZFW tried to hand me off to adm approach/tower, ZFW advised me that my reply was 'carrier only, no modulation,' and transmission was unreadable. I proceeded to adm and naved to the east side of airport while trying to lose altitude and establish communications with adm tower. Adm tower issued landing instructions and I replied by clicking my microphone twice as instructed by the tower if I could hear him. Landed at adm without incident, and talked to tower controller after securing aircraft. No conflicts with other traffic.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF AN SMT HAS ENG ROUGHNESS AND LOSS OF OIL. HE DIVERTS TO NEARBY ARPT BUT HAS RADIO PROBS WITH CARRIER ONLY AND UNREADABLE XMISSIONS. HE AND ATC IMPROVISE TO COM.
Narrative: WHILE CRUISING AT 15500 FT, R ENG DEVELOPED ROUGHNESS AND STARTED LOSING OIL. CALLED ZFW, WHO WAS PROVIDING VFR FLT FOLLOWING AT THE TIME, TOLD THEM THAT WE WERE DIVERTING TO ADM ARPT AND STARTING A VFR DSCNT. WHEN ZFW TRIED TO HAND ME OFF TO ADM APCH/TWR, ZFW ADVISED ME THAT MY REPLY WAS 'CARRIER ONLY, NO MODULATION,' AND XMISSION WAS UNREADABLE. I PROCEEDED TO ADM AND NAVED TO THE E SIDE OF ARPT WHILE TRYING TO LOSE ALT AND ESTABLISH COMS WITH ADM TWR. ADM TWR ISSUED LNDG INSTRUCTIONS AND I REPLIED BY CLICKING MY MIKE TWICE AS INSTRUCTED BY THE TWR IF I COULD HEAR HIM. LANDED AT ADM WITHOUT INCIDENT, AND TALKED TO TWR CTLR AFTER SECURING ACFT. NO CONFLICTS WITH OTHER TFC.
