Narrative:

Received and read back IFR clearance before departure. Routing was direct mxe, flight planned route. After departure runway 24, N57, departure control was contacted. He responded, 'radar contact, proceed direct mxe.' I acknowledged and commenced a turn in the direction of eno approximately 120 degrees different than the course to mxe. Shortly after phl queried me about my course and I rapidly corrected to mxe. I was mentally conditioned to a clearance to smyrna, once airborne, and that's what I did, although all communications were very clear. Only after the controller questioned my flight track did the realization come to me what I had done. Lessons learned: it can happen to you too. Stay alert, ask self questions, continually xchk.
