Narrative:
Cleared to 12000 ft by departure. The captain set altitude preselector while I was finishing the climb checklist and duties. As we passed 12000 ft the captain asked if we were cleared to 12000 ft or 13000 ft. He had inadvertently set 13000 ft in the altitude preselector. Neither of us caught it until passing 12000 ft. We immediately corrected. ATC never asked us about our altitude. No other aircraft were affected. To prevent: stricter adherence to company policy of pointing to and calling out altitude when set in preselector. I was distracted by checklist and didn't verify altitude.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF AN ACR LTT TURBOPROP OVERSHOT ASSIGNED ALT DURING DEP DUE TO MIS-SETTING THE ALT ALERT TO THE WRONG ALT.
Narrative: CLRED TO 12000 FT BY DEP. THE CAPT SET ALT PRESELECTOR WHILE I WAS FINISHING THE CLB CHKLIST AND DUTIES. AS WE PASSED 12000 FT THE CAPT ASKED IF WE WERE CLRED TO 12000 FT OR 13000 FT. HE HAD INADVERTENTLY SET 13000 FT IN THE ALT PRESELECTOR. NEITHER OF US CAUGHT IT UNTIL PASSING 12000 FT. WE IMMEDIATELY CORRECTED. ATC NEVER ASKED US ABOUT OUR ALT. NO OTHER ACFT WERE AFFECTED. TO PREVENT: STRICTER ADHERENCE TO COMPANY POLICY OF POINTING TO AND CALLING OUT ALT WHEN SET IN PRESELECTOR. I WAS DISTRACTED BY CHKLIST AND DIDN'T VERIFY ALT.
