Narrative:
Cleared to descend 40 mi out of har at 25000 ft. Captain put descend point in mcdu at 25 mi out at 25000 ft. By the time the PNF brought to captain's (PF) attention, we had to hustle and missed altitude by approximately 2000 ft. I believe newness in the A320 and the busy portion of the arrival for the PNF (first officer) was very influential in the captain having missed the altitude. I'm sorry to say this was part of the learning process for this captain. I also believe 72 hours in the airplane as PIC in the last 60 days when converting from the DC9 to the A320 was probably a little thin. Supplemental information from acn 407929: my delay in noticing the error was delayed due to frequency changes from ZOB to ZNY. During the descent and on the arrival I was temporarily out of the loop changing frequencys, during the programming of the mcdu multi-purpose control and display unit.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN A320 FLC FAILS TO MAKE THEIR XING RESTR WHEN THE LOW TIME IN TYPE CAPT PLACES INCORRECT DATA IN THE MCDU.
Narrative: CLRED TO DSND 40 MI OUT OF HAR AT 25000 FT. CAPT PUT DSND POINT IN MCDU AT 25 MI OUT AT 25000 FT. BY THE TIME THE PNF BROUGHT TO CAPT'S (PF) ATTN, WE HAD TO HUSTLE AND MISSED ALT BY APPROX 2000 FT. I BELIEVE NEWNESS IN THE A320 AND THE BUSY PORTION OF THE ARR FOR THE PNF (FO) WAS VERY INFLUENTIAL IN THE CAPT HAVING MISSED THE ALT. I'M SORRY TO SAY THIS WAS PART OF THE LEARNING PROCESS FOR THIS CAPT. I ALSO BELIEVE 72 HRS IN THE AIRPLANE AS PIC IN THE LAST 60 DAYS WHEN CONVERTING FROM THE DC9 TO THE A320 WAS PROBABLY A LITTLE THIN. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 407929: MY DELAY IN NOTICING THE ERROR WAS DELAYED DUE TO FREQ CHANGES FROM ZOB TO ZNY. DURING THE DSCNT AND ON THE ARR I WAS TEMPORARILY OUT OF THE LOOP CHANGING FREQS, DURING THE PROGRAMMING OF THE MCDU MULTI-PURPOSE CTL AND DISPLAY UNIT.
