Narrative:
While assuming the duties of crew chief, jul/xx/98, I assigned 2 mechanics to complete the required overwater extended range inspection on trip xyz, ZZZ-XXX, aircraft nose #yzy. At the time of the assignment, I was under the belief that the mechanics I assigned were extended range qualified. The check was completed without incident. The release was signed by myself. The trip departed and landed at its destination without incident. Around XA00 EST, I discovered that the mechanics I assigned to the extended range check had extended range qualifications that had expired. The safety and airworthiness of the aircraft was never an issue.
