Narrative:

I failed to check the wording of far 61.23 and was under the impression that my 3RD class medical (all 3RD class medicals) certificate was good for 36 months. Had I checked the far, I would have seen that since my certificate was issued jun/xx/96 (prior to the september 1996 cutoff), it was good only for 24 months. When I did my 3 hours of refresher training jul/xa/98, my instructor incorrectly agreed that my certificate was still current. I flew jul/xb/98 with him, and jul/xc/98 solo. I had a funny feeling so I checked 61.23 and found out my medical expired jun/xa/98. I immediately scheduled a new medical examination to be done jul/xd/98 by dr aa. I won't fly again until I have a new medical certificate. Lesson learned: read the FARS in detail each yr, and don't always rely on someone else's opinion without verification.

HAD I CHKED THE FAR, I WOULD HAVE SEEN THAT SINCE MY CERTIFICATE WAS ISSUED JUN/XX/96 (PRIOR TO THE SEPTEMBER 1996 CUTOFF), IT WAS GOOD ONLY FOR 24 MONTHS. WHEN I DID MY 3 HRS OF REFRESHER TRAINING JUL/XA/98, MY INSTRUCTOR INCORRECTLY AGREED THAT MY CERTIFICATE WAS STILL CURRENT. I FLEW JUL/XB/98 WITH HIM, AND JUL/XC/98 SOLO.
