Narrative:
This flight was inbound to slt and talking to ZNY at approximately XA45Z when I advised the controller that we would need to deviate 10 degrees or so to the right to avoid a thunderstorm anvil overhang. He told me that I had to ask before turning and then approved the request. Several mins later he asked how much further we would go before returning direct slt. I told him we had yet to reach the overhang and it would be a bit longer. He replied that we were 'violating everyone else's airspace,' and that no one else was deviating. He then handed us off to ZOB who cleared us direct cxr which was basically straight ahead. I believe the ny controller has confused his job of providing separation of aircraft with my job of determining the best course of action under varying circumstances. TCASII displayed no traffic within 40 mi and I find it hard to believe we violated anyone's airspace let alone everyone's.
