Narrative:
First officer's GS failed during a visual approach into stl. We wrote it up and our maintenance department deferred the GS. After doing one more out and back (round-trip), we realized that the GS is not deferrable and they used an inappropriate deferral. We had flown the aircraft since writing it up and getting the incorrect deferral. This was an oversight on our behalf. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter states that the error was found by the captain of the next crew who took the aircraft. It was a problem of wrong item numbers for the deferral. Maintenance had written it up under the ground proximity number which referenced GS. The flying captain had glanced at that number and saw GS referenced but did not notice it was under ground proximity instead of navigation. Under the correct number for navigation equipment it indicates two installed, two required. The aircraft has an MEL book aboard for ready reference.

Title: FLC OF BA4101 HAS FO GS FAIL ON VISUAL APCH. IT IS DEFERRED BY MAINT AFTER WRITE-UP AND THEY FLY ONE MORE TRIP BEFORE REALIZING THAT THE GS IS NOT DEFERRABLE.
Narrative: FO'S GS FAILED DURING A VISUAL APCH INTO STL. WE WROTE IT UP AND OUR MAINT DEPT DEFERRED THE GS. AFTER DOING ONE MORE OUT AND BACK (ROUND-TRIP), WE REALIZED THAT THE GS IS NOT DEFERRABLE AND THEY USED AN INAPPROPRIATE DEFERRAL. WE HAD FLOWN THE ACFT SINCE WRITING IT UP AND GETTING THE INCORRECT DEFERRAL. THIS WAS AN OVERSIGHT ON OUR BEHALF. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATES THAT THE ERROR WAS FOUND BY THE CAPT OF THE NEXT CREW WHO TOOK THE ACFT. IT WAS A PROB OF WRONG ITEM NUMBERS FOR THE DEFERRAL. MAINT HAD WRITTEN IT UP UNDER THE GND PROX NUMBER WHICH REFED GS. THE FLYING CAPT HAD GLANCED AT THAT NUMBER AND SAW GS REFED BUT DID NOT NOTICE IT WAS UNDER GND PROX INSTEAD OF NAV. UNDER THE CORRECT NUMBER FOR NAV EQUIP IT INDICATES TWO INSTALLED, TWO REQUIRED. THE ACFT HAS AN MEL BOOK ABOARD FOR READY REF.
