Narrative:

Departed fdk on IFR release with clearance to initial altitude, unable to hear departure instruction over radio once airborne, could hear aircraft's call sign but no more. Other airborne aircraft relayed instruction from departure which included approximately 180 degree heading change and climb up an additional 1000 ft. During heading change and climb, pulled out handheld radio from flight case to tune in departure. Was able to establish communication with departure on handheld radio, but in process, exceeded altitude clearance by 800 ft. Immediately descended to cleared altitude when communication established. All other frequencys for remainder of trip worked fine on panel radios. Suggestion to prevent a recurrence: fly aircraft first, communicate second, have handheld in 'ready position.'

Title: PLT OF AN SMT TWIN LOST AUDIO ON COM RADIO DURING CLB TO, AND MAINTAIN, INITIAL CLRNC ALT. CLRNC ALT. WHILE RPTR WAS RECONTACTING ATC ON A HANDHELD RADIO, HE CLBED 800 FT ABOVE ASSIGNED.

Narrative: DEPARTED FDK ON IFR RELEASE WITH CLRNC TO INITIAL ALT, UNABLE TO HEAR DEP INSTRUCTION OVER RADIO ONCE AIRBORNE, COULD HEAR ACFT'S CALL SIGN BUT NO MORE. OTHER AIRBORNE ACFT RELAYED INSTRUCTION FROM DEP WHICH INCLUDED APPROX 180 DEG HDG CHANGE AND CLB UP AN ADDITIONAL 1000 FT. DURING HDG CHANGE AND CLB, PULLED OUT HANDHELD RADIO FROM FLT CASE TO TUNE IN DEP. WAS ABLE TO ESTABLISH COM WITH DEP ON HANDHELD RADIO, BUT IN PROCESS, EXCEEDED ALT CLRNC BY 800 FT. IMMEDIATELY DSNDED TO CLRED ALT WHEN COM ESTABLISHED. ALL OTHER FREQS FOR REMAINDER OF TRIP WORKED FINE ON PANEL RADIOS. SUGGESTION TO PREVENT A RECURRENCE: FLY ACFT FIRST, COMMUNICATE SECOND, HAVE HANDHELD IN 'READY POS.'
