Narrative:
LR23 had departed earlier in the morning when one ATC controller was working multiple stations (ground, clearance, tower). The flight was returning to sdf from an airport where ATC worked tower, approach and ground -- all on the same frequency. Initially LR23 was on 124.5 approach, then we were switched to 120.5 when we were abeam the airport. We were at 4000 ft MSL and were vectored for a visual. 8 NM from runway, still at 4000 ft, we were 'cleared for a visual approach to runway 17L.' we had to hustle down to make the field and were never told to contact tower. After we landed then cleared the runway, we called tower 120.3, and told them we were clear on the taxiway. (Since we had been on 120.5 we, in our haste to land, had not seen we were not on 120.3.) tower told us to contact ground for taxi. Ground told us to taxi. I inquired if tower and approach, 120.3 and 120.5, were the same person -- they said no.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN LR23 LANDS AT SDF, KY, WITHOUT CLRNC TO LAND.
Narrative: LR23 HAD DEPARTED EARLIER IN THE MORNING WHEN ONE ATC CTLR WAS WORKING MULTIPLE STATIONS (GND, CLRNC, TWR). THE FLT WAS RETURNING TO SDF FROM AN ARPT WHERE ATC WORKED TWR, APCH AND GND -- ALL ON THE SAME FREQ. INITIALLY LR23 WAS ON 124.5 APCH, THEN WE WERE SWITCHED TO 120.5 WHEN WE WERE ABEAM THE ARPT. WE WERE AT 4000 FT MSL AND WERE VECTORED FOR A VISUAL. 8 NM FROM RWY, STILL AT 4000 FT, WE WERE 'CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 17L.' WE HAD TO HUSTLE DOWN TO MAKE THE FIELD AND WERE NEVER TOLD TO CONTACT TWR. AFTER WE LANDED THEN CLRED THE RWY, WE CALLED TWR 120.3, AND TOLD THEM WE WERE CLR ON THE TXWY. (SINCE WE HAD BEEN ON 120.5 WE, IN OUR HASTE TO LAND, HAD NOT SEEN WE WERE NOT ON 120.3.) TWR TOLD US TO CONTACT GND FOR TAXI. GND TOLD US TO TAXI. I INQUIRED IF TWR AND APCH, 120.3 AND 120.5, WERE THE SAME PERSON -- THEY SAID NO.
