Narrative:
On visual approach for runway 16 after being dumped high and fast (at least 2 dots above GS and 190 KTS requested, 170 KTS agreed to). Was working to get aircraft configured and stabilized for approach, when copilot saw other aircraft (cross- cockpit) on decreasing range, constant bearing. Called my attention to other aircraft. Evaluated situation, abandoned approach, climbing and turning west. Announced intentions by radio to ATC just as TCASII TA announced. ATC then assigned us heading and altitude for another approach. First officer saved the day. ATC was useless and should have seen imminent midair. Slam dunking preoccupied me with controling aircraft and not monitoring outside (again, caused by ATC). Not sure if other aircraft overshot runway 17R centerline or lined up with wrong runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B727 FLC INITIATES EVASIVE MANEUVER WHILE CONDUCTING A VISUAL APCH WHEN A B767 DEVIATED INTO THE B727 FLT PATH. PIC CONCERNED WITH ATC NON ACTION IN ALERTING B727 FLC OF CONVERGING TFC.
Narrative: ON VISUAL APCH FOR RWY 16 AFTER BEING DUMPED HIGH AND FAST (AT LEAST 2 DOTS ABOVE GS AND 190 KTS REQUESTED, 170 KTS AGREED TO). WAS WORKING TO GET ACFT CONFIGURED AND STABILIZED FOR APCH, WHEN COPLT SAW OTHER ACFT (CROSS- COCKPIT) ON DECREASING RANGE, CONSTANT BEARING. CALLED MY ATTN TO OTHER ACFT. EVALUATED SIT, ABANDONED APCH, CLBING AND TURNING W. ANNOUNCED INTENTIONS BY RADIO TO ATC JUST AS TCASII TA ANNOUNCED. ATC THEN ASSIGNED US HDG AND ALT FOR ANOTHER APCH. FO SAVED THE DAY. ATC WAS USELESS AND SHOULD HAVE SEEN IMMINENT MIDAIR. SLAM DUNKING PREOCCUPIED ME WITH CTLING ACFT AND NOT MONITORING OUTSIDE (AGAIN, CAUSED BY ATC). NOT SURE IF OTHER ACFT OVERSHOT RWY 17R CTRLINE OR LINED UP WITH WRONG RWY.
