Narrative:

During climb out on flight plan route, dfw to mem, captain was flying and discussing altitude/step climbs with controller. I (first officer) was reviewing approach pages for alternate airports in manual when captain said 'outbound 042 degree radial passing over txk.' I said 'ok' without verifying. Captain turned 042 degrees vice 058 degrees on J42. ATC queried us and we corrected approximately 25 NM out of VOR climbing through FL310. Aircraft at FL330 was asked to slow 20 KIAS while we rejoined. We were told to level at FL310 (presumably because separation with aircraft at FL330 would be less than desired due to speed differential). Factors: copilot distraction by reviewing approach plates in manual and did not back up captain flying during turn over NAVAID. Captain flying mistakenly turned 042 degrees for J42 vice correct 058 degrees. Captain distraction by multiple altitude changes.

Title: ACR CAPT WAS SOCIALIZING WITH THE CTLR AND MISSED THE TURN OVER THE VOR. CTLR CORRECTED CAPT BY STOPPING HIS CLB TO PREVENT CONFLICT WITH ACFT ABOVE HIM.

Narrative: DURING CLBOUT ON FLT PLAN RTE, DFW TO MEM, CAPT WAS FLYING AND DISCUSSING ALT/STEP CLBS WITH CTLR. I (FO) WAS REVIEWING APCH PAGES FOR ALTERNATE ARPTS IN MANUAL WHEN CAPT SAID 'OUTBOUND 042 DEG RADIAL PASSING OVER TXK.' I SAID 'OK' WITHOUT VERIFYING. CAPT TURNED 042 DEGS VICE 058 DEGS ON J42. ATC QUERIED US AND WE CORRECTED APPROX 25 NM OUT OF VOR CLBING THROUGH FL310. ACFT AT FL330 WAS ASKED TO SLOW 20 KIAS WHILE WE REJOINED. WE WERE TOLD TO LEVEL AT FL310 (PRESUMABLY BECAUSE SEPARATION WITH ACFT AT FL330 WOULD BE LESS THAN DESIRED DUE TO SPD DIFFERENTIAL). FACTORS: COPLT DISTR BY REVIEWING APCH PLATES IN MANUAL AND DID NOT BACK UP CAPT FLYING DURING TURN OVER NAVAID. CAPT FLYING MISTAKENLY TURNED 042 DEGS FOR J42 VICE CORRECT 058 DEGS. CAPT DISTR BY MULTIPLE ALT CHANGES.
