Narrative:

Upon landing at swf, I taxied to the gate following the lead of the lead taxi director. The taxi and approach to the final parking spot were within normal operating parameters though the gate was poorly lighted. As we slowly approached the final parking spot, the lead taxi director crossed the lighted wands, which we had raised in his hands. I immediately stopped the aircraft. There was a slight jerking motion felt in the cockpit. It was not until completing engine shutdown and parking checklist, however, that we learned the left engine of the aircraft made contact with ground equipment, a hvac cart. The ground equipment was parked over a danger area marked in red. Ground personnel attempted to remove the cart. I called out for them to stop immediately. According to ramp personnel, they were expecting the arrival of a different aircraft -- one with rear mounted engines.

Narrative: UPON LNDG AT SWF, I TAXIED TO THE GATE FOLLOWING THE LEAD OF THE LEAD TAXI DIRECTOR. THE TAXI AND APCH TO THE FINAL PARKING SPOT WERE WITHIN NORMAL OPERATING PARAMETERS THOUGH THE GATE WAS POORLY LIGHTED. AS WE SLOWLY APCHED THE FINAL PARKING SPOT, THE LEAD TAXI DIRECTOR CROSSED THE LIGHTED WANDS, WHICH WE HAD RAISED IN HIS HANDS. I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED THE ACFT. THERE WAS A SLIGHT JERKING MOTION FELT IN THE COCKPIT. IT WAS NOT UNTIL COMPLETING ENG SHUTDOWN AND PARKING CHKLIST, HOWEVER, THAT WE LEARNED THE L ENG OF THE ACFT MADE CONTACT WITH GND EQUIP, A HVAC CART. THE GND EQUIP WAS PARKED OVER A DANGER AREA MARKED IN RED. GND PERSONNEL ATTEMPTED TO REMOVE THE CART. I CALLED OUT FOR THEM TO STOP IMMEDIATELY. ACCORDING TO RAMP PERSONNEL, THEY WERE EXPECTING THE ARR OF A DIFFERENT ACFT -- ONE WITH REAR MOUNTED ENGS.
