Narrative:
On a VFR climb through 16000 ft to maintain FL190, engaged autoplt. Going through approximately 16000 ft, autoplt failed to level off at FL190. Realized this at about FL193. Disengaged autoplt and descended back to FL190. Contributing factors to this problem were fact that I had not flown this particular aircraft before, and had not flown with this copilot before. Had recent experience in model of this aircraft where autoplt and flight director are tied together. Altitude alerter is mounted on center pedestal where it is difficult to see. The aural warning was not working. Corrective action taken was to change procedure for callout of altitude when autoplt is engaged. Other factor might be the fact that I also fly aircraft where altitude mode is automatically engaged when new altitude is selected.

Title: GII CREW OUT OF VNY WERE INSTRUCTED TO CLB TO FL190. CAPT SET THE ALERTER BUT IT FAILED AND THE FLT OVERSHOT THE ALT.
Narrative: ON A VFR CLB THROUGH 16000 FT TO MAINTAIN FL190, ENGAGED AUTOPLT. GOING THROUGH APPROX 16000 FT, AUTOPLT FAILED TO LEVEL OFF AT FL190. REALIZED THIS AT ABOUT FL193. DISENGAGED AUTOPLT AND DSNDED BACK TO FL190. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO THIS PROB WERE FACT THAT I HAD NOT FLOWN THIS PARTICULAR ACFT BEFORE, AND HAD NOT FLOWN WITH THIS COPLT BEFORE. HAD RECENT EXPERIENCE IN MODEL OF THIS ACFT WHERE AUTOPLT AND FLT DIRECTOR ARE TIED TOGETHER. ALT ALERTER IS MOUNTED ON CTR PEDESTAL WHERE IT IS DIFFICULT TO SEE. THE AURAL WARNING WAS NOT WORKING.
