Narrative:

Level at 9000 ft, we were cleared to 13000 ft and told to maintain 250 KTS. The captain was flying with pms engaged. He entered 250 KTS at the climb speed, and initiated a climb to 13000 ft. Passing 12000 ft, I glanced at the airspeed and saw that it was climbing through approximately 290 KTS toward a commanded speed of 314 KTS, displayed on the pms. I immediately called airspeed, and the captain immediately began slowing the aircraft to 250 KTS. Shortly after we began to slow, ATC cleared us to resume normal speed, and did not comment about our speed at that time. The captain and I discussed this afterward. After he entered 250 KTS in the pms he pressed the line select key once to enter the speed but forgot to press the key again to engage the mode. After we climbed through 10000 ft, the pms selected optimum climb speed rather than 250 KTS. This could have been prevented by paying more attention to detail and ensuring that 250 KTS was commanded after passing through 10000 ft.

Title: A CLBING S80 EXCEEDS THE SPD REQUIRED BY ATC.

Narrative: LEVEL AT 9000 FT, WE WERE CLRED TO 13000 FT AND TOLD TO MAINTAIN 250 KTS. THE CAPT WAS FLYING WITH PMS ENGAGED. HE ENTERED 250 KTS AT THE CLB SPD, AND INITIATED A CLB TO 13000 FT. PASSING 12000 FT, I GLANCED AT THE AIRSPD AND SAW THAT IT WAS CLBING THROUGH APPROX 290 KTS TOWARD A COMMANDED SPD OF 314 KTS, DISPLAYED ON THE PMS. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED AIRSPD, AND THE CAPT IMMEDIATELY BEGAN SLOWING THE ACFT TO 250 KTS. SHORTLY AFTER WE BEGAN TO SLOW, ATC CLRED US TO RESUME NORMAL SPD, AND DID NOT COMMENT ABOUT OUR SPD AT THAT TIME. THE CAPT AND I DISCUSSED THIS AFTERWARD. AFTER HE ENTERED 250 KTS IN THE PMS HE PRESSED THE LINE SELECT KEY ONCE TO ENTER THE SPD BUT FORGOT TO PRESS THE KEY AGAIN TO ENGAGE THE MODE. AFTER WE CLBED THROUGH 10000 FT, THE PMS SELECTED OPTIMUM CLB SPD RATHER THAN 250 KTS. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED BY PAYING MORE ATTN TO DETAIL AND ENSURING THAT 250 KTS WAS COMMANDED AFTER PASSING THROUGH 10000 FT.
